After sharing my idea, I also told Danny that the FBI was going to take Night Fall down in the morning.
“Darling said we need to find Charlie by morning, or any leverage we might have goes up in smoke.”
We hadn’t heard or seen anyone come near Danny’s building, and he still refused to leave.
Then I told him my plan. He finally agreed to my idea when he realized it meant I would leave his apartment.
“You threatened them and told them if they didn’t release Charlie you’d turn over the files, right?”
“Yes.”
“But we haven’t made a plan for the exchange.”
He frowned. “No.”
“Let’s do it then.”
Danny slid aside a small, metal security plate from in front of the laptop’s camera. I was sitting in front of the camera. “Go,” Danny said.
“We haven’t heard from you. And we are getting tired of waiting,” I said. “We need proof that she’s alive. I’ve taken over your screen. I can see anything you put there. I’ll give you two minutes to give me that proof or we hit send.”
I watched my message appear in real time on the assassin’s monitor as I typed.
I sat back, holding my breath, afraid to glance to the side where Danny was. I stared at the assassin’s screen. The backdrop was empty. There was not a single folder or document or image on the screen. It was black.
Two minutes later, I saw a cursor hopping around and then a picture appeared on the black screen. It was Charlie. It was a movie file. It began to play. The pretty face I’d seen in her mother’s photos was now ravaged with pain. Her face was streaked with black from her mascara running as she cried. Her sandy blonde hair hung dark and wet around her face. Her cat-eye glasses were gone. Her bloodshot eyes looked wildly around. Then the screen went black again.
Fuck. We needed to get to her right away.
I typed again.
“You know our demands already: Give us Charlie and we’ll destroy the files we copied. But I need an address. Now. Your time is up.”
I held my breath as I watched the black screen. After a few seconds, an address appeared. Then a still image appeared on the screen. It was of Charlie. Her face was scrunched up in pain as if she’d just been punched. Her bare arms were flecked with red, small cuts. A man stood behind her. The image only showed him from the neck down. He held a large, serrated knife in his gloved hands. The knife’s edge had blood on it.
Danny slammed the laptop shut. “Motherfuck.” He was typing angrily. Finally, he looked up. “Address is a storage locker facility in Potrero Hill.”
“Can you send the drone to watch me?” I was suddenly nervous.
“You really think he’ll give us Charlie?” Danny said. His voice was filled with anxiety.
“We’re sort of out of other options.”
He looked at me with desperation.
I reached over and grabbed my leather jacket. As I did my phone dinged. I looked down.
